Heartfelt Sympathy

is extended to the family of Bill Carlisle.

William J. "Bill" Carlisle, 87, Casselton, ND, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. He was born July 2, 1922 in Fargo, to Margaret (Mitchell) and Frank J. Carlisle, the youngest of three boys. He graduated from Fargo High School and attended NDSU. He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He married Martha Louise Dahl on December 31, 1947. They lived and farmed at Chaffee, ND, and raised five children. Bill and Martha retired from farming and moved to Casselton in 2002. Bill was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Leonard and the Silver Threads Senior Citizens, Casselton and the Casselton Masonic Lodge. He served on the Chaffee school board, the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church council, the Chaffee Farmers Elevator board. He was a charter member of the Chaffee Lion’s Club.

Bill loved his wife and family, and his love was returned many fold. Bill enjoyed traveling with his wife, Martha. He also took much pleasure in good music, beautiful boats, steam locomotives, a good book, and his dog, Charley.

He is survived by his children, Kathryn (Robert) Baldner, Susan (David) Schmidt, Elizabeth (David) Boyle, Brian Carlisle and Joan Carlisle, and Barbara (Ronald) Arneson; grandchildren, Bob (Theresa) Baldner, Christy (Greg) Castronovo, Jennifer Baldner, Dan (Magda) Schmidt, Sam Schmidt, Patrick (Anna) Boyle, Peter (Abbie) Boyle, Jim Carlisle, Sara Carlisle, Angie Carlisle, John Arneson and Paul Arneson, and great grandsons Myles and Henry Boyle and one brother, Frank (Marion) Carlisle of Green Valley, AZ. Bill is also survived by his friend and honorary daughter Michelle Bresnahan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha, his parents, and his brother, John.

The family requests that memorials be sent directly to the charity of your choice.

Visitation: Sunday, November 8, 2009 from 5 to 7 in West Funeral Chapel, Casselton, with a prayer service at 7.

Funeral Service: Monday, November 9, 2009 at 11 in St. Peter Lutheran Church, rural Leonard, ND.

Burial: Watson Cemetery, rural Leonard

125th Cookbook - Recipe Submissions

Recipes are now being collected for the 125th Anniversary Cookbook. Deadline for submissions is April 1th, but we would prefer that people start submissions as soon as possible. Recipes can be submitted in one of two ways, the online form or by using a paper form (available at the church). If you have already submitted a recipe throught the box in the Narthex, it will automatically be added.

Reverend Reuben Benjamin Jacobson Junior

Reverend Reuben Benjamin Jacobson Junior was born November 24, 1934 in Walcott Township, ND, to Reuben and Christine Jacobson Senior.

Reuben grew up and attended school in Walcott, graduating from Walcott High School in 1952. He served on active duty in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957, stationed in Washington DC, as a Radio Operator. He continued in the United States Naval Reserve out of Fargo, until 1961. He worked on various farms including his father-in-laws farm (Frank Nelson).

On June 16, 1956, he was joined in marriage to Katheleen Francis Nelson in the Walcott Lutheran Church. Reuben attended college at North Dakota State University; graduating in 1962. Reuben and family moved to Lake Park, Minnesota where he taught and coached, until 1966. Reuben received his call to ministry in 1966 and entered Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated with his Masters in Divinity in 1969. While attending seminary Reuben worked as an assistant to the pastor at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Circle Pines, Minnesota. He was ordained on July 27th and received his first call to the rural congregations of St. Peter’s Lutheran, Chaffee, and St. John’s Lutheran, Embden, North Dakota, where he served until 1972. Rueben continued to serve up and down North Dakota Highway 18 for the next forty years: St. John’s Lutheran, Hatton, and Bethany Lutheran, rural Mayville, from 1972 to 1980; Our Savior’s Lutheran, Park River, from 1980 to 1990; Christ Lutheran, Neche, and Pembina Lutheran, Pembina, from 1990 to 1994; Leonard Lutheran, West Prairie Lutheran, and Helendale Lutheran from 1990 until he retired in 2000. Reuben and Kathy moved to West Fargo to live at the Cooperative Living Center in 1998. Reuben worked interim ministry in 2003, after his wife Kathy passed away. He served Our Savior’s Lutheran, Park River, until 2004. He then served Hatton Rural Parish, Goose River Lutheran and Little Forks Lutheran, from 2004 until 2009 when he was diagnosed with cancer. Reuben also served on different committees within the Eastern North Dakota Synod.
